Beautiful Japanese Word of the Day #23
There are countless beautiful words in the Japanese language describing the beauty of seasons and nature. Through this series, we hope to share some of that with more people who are studying the Japanese language. Today's word is...
淡雪 [Awayuki]
"Awayuki refers to soft delicate snow that falls at the end of winter, which quickly melts away"
淡 [Awa] means light or weak
雪 [Yuki] means snow
Awa(i) describes light colors, light tastes, and other textures that aren't very strong in nature. It's quite amazing how Japanese has a word to describe any kind of weather. In case you don't want to call snow..."snow" every single time, Japan has your back since there are more than 100 words differentiating the different types of snow. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a name for snow that falls exactly at 5:25 am on October 16th.
