What is Oborozuki? BJWotD#16

Beautiful Japanese Word of the Day #16

There are countless beautiful words in the Japanese language describing the beauty of seasons and nature. Through this series, we hope to share some of that with more people who are interested in the Japanese language. Today's word is...

朧月 [Oborozuki]

"Oborozuki refers to a hazy moon"

朧 [Oboro] means hazy

月 [Tsuki] means moon

Because of a phenomenon in the Japanese language called rendaku, tsuki becomes zuki, or specifically duki [づき]

Writer's note: Every month there's some sort of news about some special phase of the moon or a particular star that I can only see once every 200 years, but having that every month kind of takes away the rarity don't you think?
