What is Kannazuki? BJWotD#18

Beautiful Japanese Word of the Day #18

There are countless beautiful words in the Japanese language describing the beauty of seasons and nature. Through this series, we hope to share some of that with more people who are interested in the Japanese language. Today's word is...

神無月 [Kannazuki]

"Kannazuki refers to October in the lunar calendar of Japan"

神 [Kami] means God

無 [Mu] means nothing, or for something to be absent

月 [Tsuki] means moon or month

October was the month in which Gods all over Japan would gather in Izumo located in Shimane to have a meeting. October was the month when Gods would be absent, thus the name Kannazuki, which in direct translation would be "a month with no God".

Writer's note: That's super cool. I've heard of the word Kannazuki on TV, but I never knew it came from the absence of God in October. Japanese could be so cool sometimes.
